Trekking in Ischia

Ischia is considered one of the most sought-after seaside and spa destinations in Italy, but the Green Island in the Gulf of Naples is also a perfect destination for trekking lovers.

Ischia boasts, nonetheless, a unique landscape in the world, shaped over the geological eras by incredible volcanic phenomena which have given rise to a romantic and spectacular fusion of sea and mountains, valleys and hills, very steep cliffs and natural riverbeds, woods and vineyards, Mediterranean scrub and tropical forest-like areas.

The panoramic paths that cross it make the island the ideal setting for long walks surrounded by greenery, bike rides and guided excursions to discover the hinterland, which reveals botanical and geological wonders and glimpses of rare beauty at every step.

The less fit, or those traveling with children, will be able to easily walk along the “sentiero del tufo verde” (green tuff path) that leads to the top of Mount Epomeo. With its 789 meters of height, it represents the highest peak on the island of Ischia, which can also be reached on horseback. The excursion crosses the Frassitelli acacia wood and the Falanga chestnut wood, which extends for six hectares on the slopes of the mountain.

Along the southern side of Ischia, the most fearless will be able to venture onto the characteristic Pizzi Bianchi which reveal the wild side of the island, between high cliffs, canyons and mighty agaves, which accompany hikers up to the thermal spring of Cavascura and from there to the beach of Maronti.

There are so many nature itineraries that make Ischia the island of trekking.

Among these, the so-called “sentiero dell’anima” (path of the soul), on the south/eastern side, which leads to the stunning inlets of Scarrupata and Punta San Pancrazio offering breathtaking views. The itineraries that lead to Piano Liguori, reachable from the hilly hamlet of Campagnano, or from the village of Schiappone, with rural landscapes and enchanting views that embrace the Gulf of Naples and its islands. The path that leads to the Buceto spring, among mosses, ancient stone roads and centuries-old trees. The excursion to the small white lime church of Santa Maria al Monte, the promontory overlooking the municipality of Forio, up to the path, unknown to most, which from the small square of Serrara Fontana leads to Sant’Angelo.
